What Are the Signs of Mental Illness in Children?

In an article by Metro Kids, they cover the signs of Mental Illness that Parents should be watching for in their children. 

It is important for parents to understand the difference in their child’s behavior. “The fact is one in five children in this country have a mental-health issue, says Jaime Arlia, Associate Vice President of Children & Family Services at Care Plus in Paramus, NJ”. Anxiety is most common amongst kids according to a Pew Research Study that found that about 32% of individuals with a Behavioral Health issue experience anxiety. Take notice of your children’s behavior, look for changes in sleep patterns, eating habits, substance abuse, and pay attention to your child’s interests or lack thereof. These are important warning signs are reasons for concern and it is important for parents to understand the difference between their children’s normal and irregular behavior.

Every patient at Care Plus NJ has access to Behavioral Health professionals, including psychiatrists, and psychologists. In addition, each is assigned a case manager, drug and alcohol counselor, and peer recovery specialist who play a pivotal role in the treatment process.

As a Behavioral Health professional, they guide education, group therapy and support groups and other Behavioral Health services as indicated based on each persons needs.

Motivation refers to the internal drive, desire, and commitment of an individual to initiate and sustain positive changes in their behavior, lifestyle, and overall well-being. Utilizing the stages of change model, Care Plus NJ walks patients through various stages of a substance use disorder, including precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse prevention. Understanding these stages helps individuals navigate their unique recovery journey.
