On March 2nd, 2018, Rachel Simmons will be speaking at Bergen Community College for the 2018 Care Plus NJ Foundation Annual Conference. The presentation, entitled “Enough is Enough: Cultivating Wellness and Respect Online, In Schools and In the Home”, will enlighten professionals, parents and community members on how social media and individual self-concept differences are impacting youth.

Simmons is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, and The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence. As an educator, Rachel works internationally to empower young individuals to be more authentic, assertive and self-aware.

“As a social worker who has been in the field for 20 years, I have found that Rachel’s books shed an important light on common issues that young girls face,” stated Keri Diamond, Care Plus NJ Associate Director of Development. “With so much media attention on individual empowerment, and with March being Women’s History Month, we are proud to present this timely information to the community.”

The conference will debut Simmons’s research for her new book Enough As She Is: How to Help Girls Move Beyond Impossible Standards of Success to Live Healthy, Happy, and Fulfilling Lives. Participants will explore individual self-concept differences that affect social wellness, as well as the causes and forms of psychological aggression in person and online. The presentation will offer evidence-based strategies to reduce existing levels of adolescent distress and intervene during acute bullying situations.

“Social media is changing the landscape of youth wellness, and it’s important that adults understand the impact that it is having. We are seeing these issues come up more regularly in our local school districts. We hope that our community members agree that we have picked a topic worthy of considerable attention and that they will support our efforts in bringing this valuable opportunity to Bergen County,” Diamond concluded.

The event is approved by the National Association for Social Workers for 3 Clinical Continuing Education Hours, as well as the National Board of Certified Counselors for 3 Continuing Education clock hours. This presentation will not only be useful for social workers, school counselors, child study team members, and other school and Behavioral Health professionals, but also for parents, guardians, and other community members who work with children.

The registration price of $75 includes refreshments and a resource fair that will feature local exhibitors in related fields of interest.
