ROI- NJ covers the opening of The Maternal and Family Center, a Premier Maternal Behavioral Health Treatment Center with Expert Services for Prenatal, Pregnant and Postpartum Women and Families, Including Grief and Loss.

“Maternal Behavioral Health has never been given the attention that it deserves both within the Behavioral Health field and within our communities. It’s often considered a taboo topic, when in fact many individuals are left suffering in silence. Our program is designed to address all Behavioral Health issues in and around pregnancy, and to provide personalized and compassionate care to individuals and their families when they need it most”, said Daniel Finch, MD, PMH-C, Vice President of Population Health Strategies and Director of Psychiatric Urgent Care Services at Care Plus. Dr. Finch is the first and only physician in New Jersey to attain the perinatal Behavioral Health certification (PMH-C), which requires additional training in treating a woman’s Behavioral Health during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

“Behavioral Health and physical health are indisputably interconnected, so we must ensure we are addressing both, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of individuals and growing families during pregnancy and beyond” said Melissa Sampath LPC, LCADC, ACS, PMH-C, Vice President of Community Health Services at Care Plus, who also recently attained the perinatal Behavioral Health certification (PMH-C). “More than 1 in 7 individuals (and 1 in 10 dads) experience changes in their Behavioral Health during and after pregnancy. As the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic in Bergen County, the program aims to provide as many resources as possible to families, health care providers, and our communities to raise awareness, increase access to care, and reduce stigma associated with maternal mental health” added Sampath.

The Maternal and Family Center’s specialized services includes: counseling for individuals, couples and families; support groups; medication education, evaluation and management; family education and support for fathers, spouses, partners and loved ones; case management; care coordination with primary care doctors, OB/GYNs and outside Behavioral Health professionals; and referrals to supportive services as needed.

For more information or to make a referral, please call 201-986-5000 and ask for the Maternal and Family Center. We are available Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm but hours are flexible based on individual needs.
