Workshops with a Focus on Mental Health-Related Topics Announced by CarePlus

Care Plus NJ, Inc. (CarePlus) is excited to announce their upcoming schedule of workshops to be offered through 2014-2015. Included among the workshops are DSM-V Training, Psychopharmacology Overview for Depression and Anxiety in Children and Adolescents, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, School Avoidance, Whole Body Wellness, Trauma Informed Care Assessments and Practice, and Cross-Cultural Competence Skills.

CarePlus Innovations, which is the training and education arm of CarePlus, offers workshops and customized programs for individuals, organizations, schools, and community groups. Their annual workshop schedule runs from September through May.

The workshops are designed for a variety of individuals with the majority of courses focusing on topics related to mental health. Many of the workshops offer continuing education credits (CEU’s) for those involved in Social Work. There are no prerequisites to attend.

The schedule kicks off with the DSM-V Training Course, which runs September 17th and 18th from 1pm-5pm. Participants will learn to use the new manual through a review of psychiatric disorders with attention to significant changes in the diagnostic criteria. The course is led by Christine E. Toner, who has 20 years post graduate clinical experience.

Individuals with interest in the type of course above may also find the Psychopharmacology Overview course to suit their needs. Psychopharmacology explores the usage and effects of medication for children and adolescents with emotional disorders. The workshop takes place on May 14, 2015 from 10am-12pm and is intended for anyone who works with children and adolescents in a clinical environment.

Youth Mental Health First Aid, starting on November 13, 2014, and Mental Health First Aid, on March 11, 2015, are two high demand workshops that the organization offers. The courses are designed for nearly any individual to learn and recognize the signs and symptoms of a mental health emergency for children and adults respectively. Participants involved in either workshop will learn the skills to interact with someone in a mental health crisis, be supportive, diffuse the situation, encourage professional help, and understand what to do if someone is suicidal, harming themselves, or refusing help. Mental Health First Aid courses are endorsed by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare and several State Departments of Health and Mental Health. Youth Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health First Aid each cost $150 and run from 9am-5pm on their respective dates.

Instructor Sean Campbell will discuss the importance of incorporating “whole-body wellness” into mental health supports and treatment on January 15, 2015 at the Whole Body Wellness workshop. Participants will learn the Eight Dimensions of Wellness, as well as the factors that contribute to early morbidity and mortality. The workshop runs from 10am-12pm.

CarePlus is offering a workshop on School Avoidance on October 6, 2014 from 1pm-5-pm. Led by Dr. Allen Weg, the workshop will explore methods of addressing school refusal problems in adolescents. Participants will learn criteria to assess the relevant causes and dynamics of a school refusal problem, as well as ways to manage the behavior.

Trauma Informed Care Assessments and Practice and Cross-Cultural Competence Skills aim to assist Counselors and Social Workers specifically. Trauma Informed Care will teach what complex trauma is and how it affects one’s overall health. It also covers why universal precautions are necessary in a system of care that is trauma informed. The course is set to be held on December 10, 2014 from 10am-12pm. Cross-Cultural Competence Skills provides social service professionals with the tools necessary to communicate effectively and provide services across cultural differences in a variety of contexts. Participants will explore the many aspects of cultural diversity in a course led by Paula C. Rodriguez Rust who has more than 25 years of teaching experience. This workshop takes place on February 12, 2015 from 9am-3pm and is expected to offer CEU’s for social work and satisfy cultural credit requirements.

All scheduled workshops are affordably priced and are conveniently located at the CarePlus headquarters at 610 Valley Health Plaza, Paramus, NJ.
